Meet Goose
Early teens Morgan/Standardbred Mare
Sponsorship Needed
Goose is a pretty bay mare who appears to be a Standardbred/Morgan mix of undetermined age (we are guessing early teens). We believe she has been driven from the breeching wear marks on her rump, and may have been in a driving accident based on some deep wounds and scarring on her neck. This may have understandably traumatized her and she was put out as a a broodmare. When we picked her up she was in full milk but no baby in sight.
Goose can demonstrate great curiosity with a soft eye, but as of now is barely able to be haltered and led and will visibly shut down and/or bolt if you get in her space. She is mentally broken and will need intense work to bring her back from the brink. We fully believe there is a well trained, really nice mare in there somewhere. We have been working with her several times a day and have been able to touch and stroke her with hand and training stick and get her haltered with a great deal of patience, but she is very uneasy and distrustful.
She has not offered to kick or bite and actually seems to know a good deal of basic round pen work. Regaining her full trust will be a challenge but we are confident we can help her realize not all humans are out to hurt her! We will update her age and health once she is able to stand quietly haltered for the vet/farrier. We will keep adding information and photos as we progress with her!
Update: We turned her out to just be a horse for the winter and she is now in a stall ready to pick up where we left off. Her eyes are bright and curious but she has not lost her fear of humans. All we want for Goose is to be a happy and balanced horse. Nothing else. She will be with us as part of our Sanctuary for the rest of her life.
Goose would love to be sponsored to help with her training until she has fully regained her trust and can be handled safely. Send us an email Jane@WildHeartsSanctuary.org if you would like more information on our Sponsor program.
